What a week it has been. While I try and play catch up here is some information of Emma’s first few days on this wacky planet.
I just wanted to introduce you all to Emmalyn Lucia Becker. We were
scheduled for a C-Section at 7:15 am on September 27, however Beth’s
water broke around midnight and they decided to do the C-Section right
away. So Emmalyn Lucia Becker was born at 1:34 am on September 27,
2007. She weighs 10 pounds 6 ounces and is 20 inches long. Both
Mother and Baby are doing well.

Our little girl is just about ready to finally come into our lives. We had an Ultrasound on Wednesday and they are estimating that Emma will be around 9-10 pounds. With my little girl being so big we are opting for a planned C-Section to avoid any major issues that come from trying to birth a large baby naturally. This really is the best option for both Mom and baby. So on Thursday, September 27, 2007 at 7:15 am, Mom and Dad will head into the operating room to greet the most anticipated member of our family. We are extremely excited to finally meet the little girl that we have been fussing over for the last nine months.
Check back later this week for pictures and other things announcing the birth of Emmalyn Lucia!

Well we are just a mere five and a half weeks away from Emmalyn coming into our lives and her mommy is ready for that day to come. I can not imagine how uncomfortable it has to be in the extreme heat of this summer. I am very proud and appreciative of my wife for enduring this situation with such poise and grace.

For a while we have wanted to get a 3D ultrasound picture of Emma. We know a few people that have had this done. They all said it was absolutely amazing the level of detail that you can make out on the face of the baby weeks before you will meet them for the first time.
We were afraid of being charged for a bunch of ultrasound appointments without getting a picture, so last week we decided to try one last time to get a great look at Emma in 3D. In our previous attempts the umbilical cord was in front of her face. The Ultrasound Technician said that if there is anything in front of her face it will be mapped as part of the face and create a distorted view of the baby. Well on our last attempt Emma decided to cooperate and at least give us a profile picture of her face.
We have found that when people view these pictures, it is a lot like those 3D pictures that you always saw in the mall. People stare at it for a few seconds looking puzzled and then something suddenly click and they see the image they are looking for. So I decided I should probably include a hint to help you make out the pictures better. The 3 pictures below are of the left side of Emma’s face. You will see her left cheek, her nose, her closed eyes, and it appears that she has both hands in front of her mouth.

Ok so I blink and almost two months have gone by since I have given you an update. We are now less than 12 weeks away from the arrival of the baby. Didn’t we just have like six whole months to go?
During our doctors appointment in June the doctor said that he was fairly confidant that the baby was going to be a girl but not to paint any rooms. However, at yesterdays doctors appointment, we found out that the child my beautiful wife is carrying is definitely going to be an adorable baby girl. Her name is going to be Emmalyn Lucia (loo-cee-ah). A lot of people have asked where we came up with her name, so here is the background on that descision. Well we have always liked the name Emma, so we decided pretty early on that if we had a girl her name would be Emma. We also wanted to honor both sides of our families. So we added alyn to Emma’s first name to honor Beth’s Mother and we chose the middle name Lucia to honor both my Aunt Lucy and My Grandmother Becker.
Both Mom and baby are doing well. During the ultrasound at yesterdays doctors appointment, they said that Emma already weighs three pounds. We also saw that she already has lots of hair on her head. We were going to try and get the 3D image of her face but the Umbilical cord was in the way of getting a clear picture.
Here are the ultrasound pictures from yesterday.

Well here are the latest ultrasound pictures from our Doctors appointment on May 15th. We have to views from the side and one where the baby is looking right at us and taunting us that it would not give up its secret just yet.
Only 12 more days until the next appointment and the next chance to find out if the baby is a boy or a girl!

Oh look it is already sucking its thumb.

Well it appears that the baby was not quite ready to let us know whether it is a girl or a boy. The doctors appointment went great. The heartbeat was strong and constant and the baby looked great. However, when the Ultrasound lady tried to check the gender, the baby decided to keep its secret for another month by keeping both of its heels firmly in front of its privates. So now we have to wait another month (June 12th) until we find out whether it is going to be a boy or a girl.
I do have some new ultrasound pictures and I will scan them and post them to this blog soon.

Where have the last 18 weeks gone? In seven short days (long with anticipation) we will hopefully find out the gender of our baby. It seems like it was just last week that we were planning to have a baby, and here we are almost 5 months later already. Where does all that time go?
At the last appointment, the doctor said that the baby’s heartbeat sounded strong and great. She also said that for our next appointment we will be able to see what sex the baby is, that is as long as the baby cooperates. We also have to pick a new doctor because our current doctor is also having a baby and is going to be taking a year off starting in June. So since our baby is not going to make its grand entrance until October, we have to choose one of the other doctors in the building to be the delivering doctor. Oh well, the rest of the doctors in the practice seem really nice so it will not be too big of a deal.
I guess I just can’t believe that in 7 short days we will find out whether we will be adding a handsome son or a beautiful daughter to our small family. Exciting times lie ahead thats for sure.

We had our second scheduled check up for the baby last week. They did the test for Downs Syndrome and other abnormalities. It is amazing that they can test for these things by measuring the skin thickness on the back of the neck on a fetus that is only 2 inches long.
When they first started the ultrasound you could clearly see it laying peacefully on its back. I thought to myself, “How adorable the baby just lays there peacefully in the womb at this stage.” As soon as I was done running that thought through my head, one of the baby’s arms shot out to the side and the baby began to roll over. It did not stop there the baby did a few turns and flips and at one point was standing on its head. This was great for us as we got to view the baby for about 10 minutes while the ultrasound technician tried to get the baby into the correct position to do the test. It was absolutely amazing.
So I leave you today with new photos of our little gymnast.
